Best Blogs of the Week

Post 4th, the industry’s volume (of blogs) feels down. Let’s see if that continues throughout the summer or not. We found two compelling blogs this week, from the usual suspects.

  • AllianceBernstein – This post may have some cross-over appeal into the institutional market as Mr. Peebles discusses global bonds from a Liability-Driven Investing (LDI) perspective. LDI is primarily considered by institutional investors, and some FAs.
  • BlackRock – This post is a Q&A with an FA on how she uses social media. It’s interesting and potentially an eye-opener for other FAs (though FAs that read blogs are probably already using LinkedIn and other tools).

And in case our June 26th post didn’t have enough fiscal cliffs, Franklin Templeton brings up the idea this week.

Four posts that cover four different topics.

  • BlackRock – This post covers three reasons to increase high yield bond exposure. Agree or not, yield is on the mind of many and this supports a healthy dialogue between FA and investor.
  • MFS – Jim Swanson in Spain and futbol on the radio; what could be better? This post covers the Spanish banking crisis in a small, digestible format (always helpful for FAs).
  • Russell – This post had me at mean variance optimization. More specifically, the author relates investing to the typical life situations many investors live through.
  • Wells Fargo – It’s rare to find investment commentary, market insights, or blog posts favoring health care investing. This post makes a reasonable case in a few paragraphs (and then delves into the energy sector).

By Friday morning, only 1 asset manager addressed the Affordable Care Act – Wells Fargo. That’s impressive and deserves top-billing. Additionally, we found two compelling posts that would be immediately beneficial for most FAs.

Top Billing – Wells Fargo – This post adds an economic lens to the Affordable Care Act’s political battle. Dr. Jacobsen fixates a bit on 49-person versus 50-person, nonetheless, the content is highly valuable.

  • BlackRock – This post provides 3 reasons to expect higher volatility in the 2nd half of 2012.
  • Putnam – This post includes a visual that quickly clarifies the massive differences in government bond yields.

Fiscal cliff? Until this weekend’s paper and morning talk shows, I hadn’t heard that term. And then two of last week’s best blogs reference the fiscal cliff. A third blog introduces a straightforward but unusual manner for FAs to discuss returning from “all cash” positions.

  • BlackRock – This post covers four reasons not to expect a double dip recession, and touches on the fiscal cliff.
  • Putnam – This post is a video Q&A that starts with the fiscal cliff.
  • Russell – Many FAs and clients will be immediately turned off by an algebra formula. But those who are not may find this post a clear way to discuss re-entering the markets.

Best Blogs of the Week

These two posts are as unconventional as we remember. Frankly, I’m both surprised and impressed that these firms released these blogs.

  • AllianceBernstein – In all the financial material we read, we can’t recall the last case for Japanese equities. This post makes the case.
  • Pioneer – The author posts a case for Spain’s solvency. It’s an interesting and logical process. It’s also a bold position to put in writing.
